Asseco Resovia upset three-time winners Sada Cruzeiro

 

Rzeszow, Poland, November 26, 2018 - The second match in FIVB Volleyball Men's Club World Championship Pool B on Monday saw Polish club Asseco Resovia Rzeszow defeat Sada Cruzeiro of Brazil in five sets 3-2 (23-25, 25-18, 25-23, 24-26, 17-15). The two clubs were meeting for the first time at a World Championship as the Polish team were making their debut at the competition against the three-time winners.

In a thrilling encounter Sada Cruzeiro claimed the first set before dropping the next two to their opponents. The Brazilians drew level in the fourth set taking the match into a tie-breaker which the local team claimed 17 points to 15, to the delight of their fans. Frenchman Thibault Rossard led the scoring for Resovia on 22 points assisted by 17 points from Damian Schulz and 13 from Mateusz Mika. On the other side of the net, Evandro Guerra was the highest scoring member of the Brazilian team also on 22 points, with Taylor Sander contributing 21.

One of two Polish clubs in the competition, Resovia are the fourth Polish team to make an appearance at the Club World Championship, after PGE Skra Belchatow, Jastrzebski Wegiel and ZAKSA Kedzierzyn-Kozle. Sada Cruzeiro on the other hand participate at the Club World Championship for the seventh time. Only Trentino Volley (8 in 2018) have appeared in more editions. Zenit Kazan also appear for the seventh time in the competition this year.

Both clubs play again on Tuesday in Rzeszow. Sada Cruzeiro take on Trentino Volley at 17.30 local time/16.30 GMT. Asseco Resovia play Khatam Ardakan at 20:45 local time/19.45 GMT.
